About Joiyin
What is Joiyin?
How is Joiyin different from other social apps?
- Activities first β You connect through what you're doing, not a profile feed.
- No profile photos β Auto-generated avatars only; optional bio.
- In person β The app coordinates the meetup; conversation happens offline.
- Low pressure β Browse, join when ready, leave if it doesn't fit. RSVPs aren't required.
- Privacy β Ephemeral activity chat, no follower graph. We don't sell your data.
How does Joiyin compare to RSVP-first event apps (including Meetup-style planning)?
Many event apps center on RSVPs and gatherings planned days or weeks ahead. Joiyin emphasizes spontaneous and near-term activities near you: browse by distance, time, or category; join with low commitment; leave anytime. You can still post activities up to 30 days ahead. Joiyin is not affiliated with Meetup or other third-party event products β product names appear only to describe a familiar category.
Full comparison: Joiyin and RSVP-first event apps.
Is Joiyin a dating app?
Joiyin is not a dating app. It's built for real-world activities and low-pressure connection β friends, activity partners, community, or something that might turn romantic later. The product doesn't optimize for any one of those outcomes.
That said, many people like meeting without profile photos or weeks of texting first. A few differences from swipe-first apps:
- No photo judgment - Connect based on shared interests, not carefully curated photos
- Meet in person first - Skip weeks of texting. See if there's chemistry when you're actually doing something together
- No endless DMs - Messages automatically delete 24 hours after the activity ends, keeping the focus on real-world connection
- Group activities - Meet in a low-pressure group setting, then see where things go naturally
You can use Joiyin for friendships, activity partners, community, or something that might turn romantic later. The app doesn't push you toward any one outcome β it gets you to the activity.
Is Joiyin free?
How It Works
Do I need to create a profile?
How do I find spontaneous activities near me?
Open Joiyin and browse activities near your current location by category, time, or distance. The feed is built for what's happening now or soon β most activities are within the next few hours, though you can also post things up to 30 days ahead. Join an activity to see the exact location and chat; leave anytime if it isn't a fit. If nothing nearby looks right, post what you want to do so others can join you.

Security & Privacy Features
How does Joiyin protect my safety and privacy?
Your safety is our top priority. Here's how we protect you:
Location Privacy:
- Your device location is used only when you choose to use location features (finding nearby activities, creating at your current location)
- Location is not tracked continuously or stored. We only check it when you use these features
- Non-participants never see exact meeting spots. They see an approximate area (within 500m radius)
- Participants see the precise meeting location 2 hours before the activity starts
- No location history. We don't keep a record of where you've been
Control Who Participates:
- Activity hosts can remove disruptive users from their activities
- Banned users cannot rejoin activities they've been removed from
- You're always in control of who attends your events
Report Suspicious Behavior:
- Report button on every user profile
- Admins are automatically notified when reports reach thresholds
- Multiple report categories for different violation types
Privacy by Design:
- No profile photos, ever. Everyone uses auto-generated avatars (you can regenerate yours anytime)
- Optional bio. Share as much or as little as you want
- Your activity history is limited (only recent activities shown)
- No followers, friend lists, or social graphs
- Messages automatically delete 24 hours after the activity ends
Account Security:
- Email verification required before you can use the app
- Strong password requirements enforced
- Secure email-based password reset
How does location privacy work on Joiyin?
Joiyin uses a two-tier location privacy system to protect users from stalking and location farming:
π Before Joining:
- Activity locations show as approximate areas (within 500 meters)
- You see the general neighborhood, not the exact address
- This prevents people from browsing activities to collect location data
π After Joining:
- You'll see the exact location 2 hours before the activity starts
- This time delay prevents bad actors from collecting addresses in advance
- The activity creator can still share specific details (like "meet at north entrance") in the group chat anytime
How this protects you:
- Prevents stalking by limiting who can see exact addresses and when
- Stops location farming (joining many activities just to collect data)
- Maintains audit trail of all join/leave events for security
- Balances privacy with practical coordination needs
For hosts:
- Creators can share specifics in activity chat when it helps
- Trust-based coordination allows flexibility for people who actually show up
Does the app track my location?
No continuous tracking, but here's how location works:
When Location IS Used:
- When you search for "activities near me"
- When you create an activity at your current location
- When you want to see distances to activities
- When you center the map on your location
When Location is NOT Used:
- When browsing all activities (not filtered by distance)
- When viewing activity details
- When chatting in activities
- When viewing profiles
Important:
- Location is checked only when you use these specific features
- No background tracking. We don't monitor your location when you're not using the app
- No location history. We don't store where you've been
- You can use the app fully without granting location permission (you just won't see distance-based features)
Can I use the app without sharing my location?
Yes! The app works fully without location permission.
Without location, you can:
- Browse all activities globally
- Search activities by keyword or category
- Create activities (manually enter location)
- Join activities and chat with participants
- View profiles and build trust score
What you'll miss:
- Distance calculations ("X km away")
- "Near me" filtering
- One-tap "create at my current location"
- Map centering on your position
You decide which features matter to you. Location permission is entirely optional.
Why don't you allow profile photos?
This is intentional for your safety and privacy:
- Harder to identify you in real-world settings unless someone has already met you
- Prevents catfishing and fake profiles (everyone uses the same avatar system)
- Reduces superficial judgments based on appearance
- Protects your privacy (no photos linked to your account)
You can regenerate your avatar anytime to get a new look, but the system keeps everyone on equal footing.
What if someone is joining all my activities or following me around?
If you notice concerning behavior:
- Immediate Action: Kick/ban the user from specific activities you host
- Report the User: Use the report button on their profile
- Pattern Detection: Multiple reports trigger automatic admin review
- Limited Visibility: Your full activity history isn't visible to others
While we don't have a global block feature yet, the combination of activity-level bans and admin reporting helps protect against stalking behavior. Admins take repeat offenders seriously.
Can someone see what activities I'm attending or if I viewed their profile?
No. Your participation history is private:
- Only 3-5 of your most recent activities are shown on your profile
- Others cannot see your full activity history
- There's no "who viewed my profile" feature
- We don't display follower counts or social connections
The limited information visible helps prevent stalking while still building enough trust for real-world meetups.
What information do I have to share publicly?
We require minimal information:
Required:
- Username (for identification)
- Real name (for real-world safety. People need to know who they're meeting)
- Email (for account security, never displayed publicly)
- Auto-generated avatar (no photos allowed)
Optional:
- Bio (share as much or as little as you want)
We require real names because Joiyin is for real-world meetups. Knowing who you're meeting is essential for safety. But we don't allow photos. Everyone uses auto-generated avatars for privacy and equality.
How secure is my account?
Your account is protected with:
- Email verification required before you can use the app
- Strong password requirements (minimum length, complexity)
- Secure password reset via email verification
- No password storage (passwords are hashed using industry-standard encryption)
What happens to my data if I delete my account?
You have full control over your data:
- All your activities are permanently deleted
- Your messages are removed from chats
- Your profile is permanently removed
- Your account cannot be recovered after deletion
See our Privacy Policy for complete details on data handling and deletion.

Features & Functionality
What are Joiys?
What is "Something for today"?
Something for today is a lightweight, low-pressure prompt inside Joiyin. Each day shows one optional idea meant to be noticed rather than completed β useful when you want a calm nudge before joining a group activity, or when you simply want to stay present in your day. There are no streaks, scores, or leaderboards, and nothing records whether you acted on the idea.
You can open it directly here (no account required to try): Open Something for today. Product announcement: Something for Today press release.
What are Trust Points?
Can I schedule activities in advance?
Can I cancel an activity after creating it?
What types of activities can I create?
Almost anything that brings people together in person:
- Coffee or meals
- Sports and fitness
- Study or work sessions
- Outdoor adventures
- Games and hobbies
- Community events
- Creative projects
Avoid activities that violate our terms of service or community guidelines.
Is there a limit to how many activities I can join?
Trust & Accountability
What if I can't attend an activity I created?
Life happens, and we get that! If you can't make it, just let participants know in the chat. They'll understand if you have a legitimate reason (car trouble, family emergency, etc.), and they can still enjoy the location and activity even if you're not there.
The only time there's a penalty is if:
- You don't show up, AND
- You don't communicate with participants, AND
- 30% of participants vote that you didn't attend
Even then, you only lose the +3 points you got for creating the activity. You don't go negative.
How does the voting system work?
After an activity ends, participants have 24 hours to report if the host didn't show up. It takes 30% of participants to agree before any penalty applies.
Examples:
- 3 participants β 1 vote needed (33%)
- 5 participants β 2 votes needed (40%)
- 10 participants β 3 votes needed (30%)
This prevents false reports from a single upset person while still holding hosts accountable.
What's the best way to avoid a penalty if I can't make it?
Just communicate! Send a message in the activity chat:
"Hey everyone, my car broke down and I can't make it. You should still go to the park thoughβit's beautiful at sunset! So sorry for the inconvenience."
Participants almost always understand legitimate reasons. Communication is key.
What if participants still show up and have fun without me?
The voting system is self-regulating. The community decides what’s reasonable based on the situation.
What if no one joins my activity?
How many points do I lose if I don't show up?
You only lose the +3 points you earned for creating the activity. You don't get extra penalties, and you can't go negative from this.
Point breakdown:
- Create activity: +3 points
- Successfully host (people show up): +5 bonus points
- Don't show without explanation: -3 points (removes creation bonus)
Can I delete an activity if my plans change?
Yes! You can delete an activity anytime. There's a small penalty (-3 points) to discourage last-minute cancellations, but participants will be notified automatically so they don't show up expecting you.
Tip: If you delete early, participants have time to adjust their plans. If you delete right before, let them know in chat first!
Bottom line on trust and accountability?
Don't be afraid to create activities! The system is designed to be forgiving and community-driven. If you communicate and are honest about your situation, people understand. The penalty only applies when someone consistently no-shows without explanation.
Remember: The goal is authentic connections, not perfect attendance. Life is unpredictable, and that's okay. Just keep people in the loop! π
