Toronto Healthcare Professional Launches Joiyin: A Life-Enrichment Tool Fighting Loneliness Through Real-World Connection

After 20+ Years Witnessing the Loneliness Crisis, Dentist Learns to Code and Builds App to Reconnect Communities

TORONTO, ON – November 10, 2024 – In a world where social media has amplified isolation rather than connection, one healthcare professional is taking matters into his own hands. After witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of loneliness on both his patients and his own children, a Toronto-based dentist with over two decades of clinical experience taught himself to code and built Joiyin – a mobile app designed to bring people together for spontaneous, real-world activities.

The Problem: A Public Health Crisis

Loneliness has been recognized by health organizations worldwide as a serious public health concern, with studies linking social isolation to increased risk of mortality, depression, and chronic illness. While social media promised to connect us, it often leaves people feeling more isolated, anxious, and disconnected from authentic human interaction.

“In my practice, I’ve seen countless people struggling with stress and emotional challenges that stem from a lack of genuine connection,” said Anthony Chung, founder of Joiyin. “As a parent of four young adults, I’ve watched an entire generation struggle to build the deep, lasting friendships that previous generations took for granted. These connections aren’t just nice to have – they’re essential for emotional resilience and wellbeing.”

The Solution: Real People, Real Activities, Real Time

Joiyin is a life-enrichment tool designed to bring people together in person. Instead of endless scrolling, profile stalking, and performative posting, Joiyin focuses on one simple goal: getting people together in person. Users can post or discover activities happening now or within the next 30 days – whether it’s grabbing coffee, going for a walk, playing pickup sports, or attending a local event.

Key Features:

  • Spontaneous & Planned Activities: Browse activities happening today or plan ahead up to 30 days
  • Anonymous-Friendly Design: No profile pictures required, no follower counts, no social pressure
  • Ephemeral Messaging: Chat with activity participants for 24 hours, then messages automatically delete
  • Location-Based Discovery: Find activities near you with privacy-first location settings
  • Global Future Discovery: View upcoming activities anywhere in the world
  • No RSVP Pressure: Low-commitment approach to meeting new people

An Unlikely Journey: From Dentist to Developer

What makes this story particularly compelling is Chung’s background. With no formal programming training, he learned to code from scratch using modern AI-assisted development tools, building Joiyin while maintaining his dental practice.

“I’m not a Silicon Valley entrepreneur or a career software developer,” Chung explained. “I’m someone who saw a problem affecting real people – including people I care about – and decided to do something about it. The technology is just a tool; the mission is what matters.”

The result is a production-ready application built with Flutter, featuring:

  • ~2,520 automated tests across 456 test files (unit + widget smoke; May 2026)
  • Support for 8 languages (English, Spanish, French, Dutch, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Swedish, Ukrainian)
  • Progressive web app architecture accessible on any device
  • Row-level security and GDPR-compliant data handling
  • Real-time updates and scalable infrastructure

Why Toronto, Why Now

Toronto was chosen as the launch market for strategic reasons: it’s one of the most diverse, multicultural cities in the world, with dense, walkable neighborhoods ideal for spontaneous meetups.

“Toronto has given me so much,” said Chung. “Launching here first allows us to refine the experience in a city that embraces innovation and multiculturalism before expanding globally. If we can make it work in Toronto’s unique environment, we can make it work anywhere.”

The timing is equally deliberate. Public demand for healthier, more authentic social experiences is growing, with increasing awareness of social media’s negative mental health impacts. Joiyin offers an alternative – technology that serves human connection rather than replacing it.

Business Model & Sustainability

Joiyin is built to be sustainable through multiple revenue streams:

  • Business Partnerships: Local businesses sponsor activities and branded experiences
  • Premium Subscriptions: Power users access advanced tools like analytics dashboards and priority support
  • In-App Purchases: Users purchase “Joiys” (virtual currency) for activity boosts and enhanced visibility
  • Future Advertising: Non-intrusive ads planned to offset infrastructure costs

“We’re not trying to compete with existing social media,” Chung emphasized. “We’re offering an alternative. A place where technology helps people connect face-to-face, not screen-to-screen.”

Looking Ahead: From Toronto to the World

While currently focused on building critical mass in Toronto, Joiyin has ambitions for global expansion. The app is designed to scale, with infrastructure capable of supporting millions of users across continents.

“Our vision is simple,” said Chung. “We want to make real-world human interaction as frictionless as opening a social app – but without the toxicity. If we can help even a small fraction of people build genuine friendships and combat loneliness, we’ll have succeeded.”

Availability

Joiyin is currently available as a web app for beta testing at www.joiyin.com. The platform is accessible on any device with a web browser, with iOS and Android native apps planned for future release. Beta participation is free, with optional in-app purchases for enhanced features.
